If you’ve begun to schedule a consultation for your breast augmentation, then you might be a little overwhelmed at the amount of information out there about the procedure. That’s because it continues to be the most popular plastic surgery procedure from year to year. You should know that your consultation will come with some decisions, so here are the basics of the decisions you’ll need to discuss with your plastic surgeon.

What type of implant do I want?

There are many, many different types of implants that come in virtually every size. Generally, these come filled with either saline (sterilized salt water) or silicone (usually medical grade). These offer advantages and disadvantages to feel, placement, and certain long-term responsibilities. These can have many other features, including being round- or tear-shaped, and smooth or textured. Your plastic surgeon will talk with you at length about which type is best for you and your aesthetic goals, lifestyle, and personal anatomy.

Over or under the muscle?

Your chosen implants can be placed either above the pectoral muscle or beneath it, and these also offer advantages and disadvantages. Generally, placement below the muscle creates a more natural feel and can create a subtler profile— however, this can cause more pain during recovery and more difficulty assessing the implant for rupture. Placement above the muscle can create a greater projection, but any rippling or ruptures can be more evident. The feel of the implant can also be much more obvious. Different placement techniques can accompany the implant that you choose, so your plastic surgeon can plan the best procedure for you.

What type of incision will I have?

This option can most often depend on your unique anatomy, implant choice, and placement. The most common types of incisions are within the armpit (axillary), under the breast (inframammary), or around the nipple (periareolar). Less common types include the transabdominal (usually placed at the same time as a tummy tuck) or Transumbilical. These all offer advantages and disadvantages as far as scarring and recovery, and your plastic surgeon can determine which one will get you the best results.
