A fairly common question of rhinoplasty comes from patients who are very flatten nose and they will say how do you improve the flatness of my nose. That can be done through several different techniques often using either cartilage or implant type materials to augment the nose. It really depends upon how much augmentations needed. If the patient needs a lot of augmentation then sometimes their rib can be used or I used commonly what’s called the radiated cartilage draft that’s obtained from the cadaver. There are some surgeons that will use implants like a silicone implant or mid port implant. I am not a big fan of those implants cause there’s a high incidence of what’s called extrusion which basically is when the implant works it’s way through the skin or into the nostril and they often they commonly can get infected. So that’s why I prefer the patient’s own rib or in a radiated rib which is in their and often incorporate in the soft tissues and that’s augment the flat nose.
