Deciding to have a breast augmentation to enhance your breasts can be a life changing decision! Before you choose the breast augmentation, it’s important to know what to expect during recovery and the years following your procedure to ensure that you’re ready.

Your recovery process

The breast augmentation is usually performed on an outpatient basis and you will be given a general anesthesia for your comfort. Once your surgery is over, it is possible to walk around within a few hours, and you probably can go back to light duty work within 3- 5 days. This involves taking the appropriate amount of time off and having someone there to care for you if you choose.

You may feel sore during the first week after your procedure and it is important to avoid any light exercises until the third or fourth week and strenuous exercise for six to eight weeks or until your surgeon gives you the OK. You will be required to wear a surgical bra for a while after your augmentation to ensure proper healing and help the implants settle. You must follow all the instructions given by your surgeon for post-surgery care if you want to heal faster and recover well from the surgery.

Your results

After your breast augmentation, you’ll likely be eager to see your results!  A light dressing is applied and the day after the procedure you can usually remove the dressing and take a look a the results. You are also usually able to shower the next day.  Once healed, you’ll still need to practice your patience, as your results may still be hidden by post-procedure swelling. It also may seem as though your implants are sitting high on the chest at first. It is normal for your implants to take some time to drop and settle beneath the skin.

Life after breast augmentation

Your recovery process isn’t the only thing you’ll need to prepare for! Breast implants are a long-term commitment and your life will be a little different after. Once you have undergone the augmentation surgery, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • You can still get a mammogram after your surgery and it is recommended that you continue your screenings as recommended by your doctor.
  • If you had chosen silicone implants, you must get periodic MRI monitoring, mammograms and ultrasound in order to detect any rupture sign of rupture.
  • In case of a future pregnancy or significant weight fluctuation, your augmentation results can get affected. If you are not happy with the changes, you may have to undergo a secondary procedure.

The most important factor to ensure long lasting results from your augmentation surgery is to choose an experienced and qualified surgeon. If you are contemplating getting augmentation for your breasts, it might be time to book a consultation with board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Wallach.
